The Notre Dame Football program could have a star in Tyler Buchner, but they need to be patient with their true freshman signal-caller.

The Notre Dame Football team is going to have to rely on some true freshman this upcoming season, after losing a ton of talent to the NFL Draft this year. However, while guys like Rocco Spindler, Blake Fisher, and Lorenzon Style Jr., to name a few on offense, will play a significant role, one key player should be shown patience.

That player is Tyler Buchner, the Irish’s potential future at quarterback, and a player who is coming off not taking a single snap this past season due to COVID-19. An early enrollee, Buchner is getting his collegiate career started early, but stepping into Ian Book‘s shoes on Day 1 may be too much for the young signal-caller.

If they let Buchner learn in 2021, and play in a few games, then redshirt, they would then have four more seasons of him under center if he decided to stay in South Bend for his entire eligibility.

Notre Dame football to roll with Jack Coan in 2021

In 2021, the Irish should roll with Jack Coan at quarterback, a solid veteran who once led Wisconsin to a Big Ten title game. Coan is extremely accurate with the football, and does not make many mistakes, which makes him a perfect successor to a legend in Book. Sure, Book could do more with his feet, but Coan is no slouch, and the Irish are going to win a lot more games than they lose with him at quarterback.

Notre Dame Football returns an elite running back in Kyren Williams, as well as an elite tight end in Michael Mayer, but questions still remain on that side of the ball.

This is a Notre Dame Football program that is revamping their offensive line this season, and sticking a true freshman behind them would not be the smartest plan for Brian Kelly and Tommy Rees. The last thing you want to do is take a big-time prospect, and shatter their confidence, so in 2021, Buchner is better off holding a clipboard and getting to know what it means to start at this level.
