Notre Dame Football: Biggest NFL Draft steals of all-time

Bill Fischer-Lineman

  • 1948 Draft: Round 32, Pick 300

Let’s admit something right away, Bill Fischer was drafted in the first round, number 10 overall in 1949. He was also the very last pick of the 1948 NFL Draft when he went 300th in the 32nd round. Not for nothing, this wasn’t entirely uncommon then, and he was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals both times.

Still, if you look only at that 1948 pick, it was an absolute steal for the Cardinals. Fischer had been a two-time All-American, Outland Trophy winner, and a two-time National Champion at Notre Dame. That would leave him as a College Football Hall of Fame talent.

Fischer would keep things rolling in the NFL, with three Pro Bowls in a row, from 1950-52.

Fischer’s NFL career was admittedly short, only spanning 1949-53, but he made the most out of it. The funny thing is, at 6ft 2in and 248lbs, Fischer would barely be big enough to play any position in the modern NFL game, let alone as a two-way lineman.
