Notre Dame football: Early takeaways from 2021 spring practice

What is Going on at Wide Receiver?

It’s no secret that Notre Dame Football had its biggest issue on offense last season trying to find a consistent wide receiver, in particular one who could go deep. Now, the wide receiver room needs to step up and help the new quarterback, whoever that ends up being.

Jordan Johnson appears to be making an impact early. Johnson is a 4-star prospect from the Class of 2020, with some recruiting services ranking him as a 5-star. He only played two games last season, but now that he’s had a year to adjust to the college game he must start stepping up moving forward.

Johnson isn’t the only young player who is going to need to leap forward next season. Xavier Watts has reportedly been getting a lot of work in, and he could be ready to start getting a lot of playing time in 2021. That’ll be important, as the next generation of Irish wide receivers need to step up after a year where they were all missing.

Avery Davis is seeming to get a lot of the reps at wide receiver too. He must become more consistent while acting as a mentor to the young wide receivers. After all, Davis has some of the best experience of anyone on the offense.

Another veteran who needs to step up is Braden Lenzy. The track star was expected to take a step forward last season, but injuries slowed him down and that leap forward never came. He has the speed to be a burner that the Irish need, but he needs to prove it in the Spring first, though, it is worth pointing out that from what we’ve seen of Spring ball, Lenzy looks ready to bounce back too.
