Notre Dame Football: Remembering the Chicken Soup Game

Starting the Second Half

In the locker room, something was clearly wrong with Montana’s health. Doctors tended to him, feeding him chicken soup to try and warm him up. The issue had gone beyond the flu, as his body temperature had dropped to 96°F.

Now, Montana was fighting hypothermia too.

He wouldn’t be able to rejoin his teammates at the start of the third quarter. Houston, meanwhile, was in the middle of their 34-0 run. By the time the run was done, the score was 34-12 and everyone assumed the game was over.

Montana came back at the end of the third quarter, but things still weren’t right. He threw two more interceptions on his first two drives back in the game. Then momentum turned, and the Notre Dame comeback was on.
