Notre Dame Football: Remembering the Chicken Soup Game

Making the Comeback

The Irish would block a punt, with Steve Cichy returning it for a touchdown. Montana turned it on from there, setting himself up for a rushing touchdown by throwing a deep ball to Jerome Heavens. Both of these two touchdowns ended with a two-point conversion, and the game was 34-28. Houston still held the lead.

The Cougars had the ball under a minute to go, on their own 29-yard line. Up a touchdown and the Irish out of timeouts, they wanted to end the comeback, but it was fourth down now. Two blocked punts scared Bill Yeoman into going for it on 4th down.

He wouldn’t get it. Montana and the Notre Dame offense came back out onto the field, where they quickly got the ball inside the 10-yard line with only six seconds left. Montana looked for Kris Haines, but he slipped and it was incomplete.
