The Notre Dame Football program has a battle for the QB1 spot this year, and no one should be surprised with Drew Pyne making it that way.

When Notre Dame Football takes the field against Florida State, the new Irish starting quarterback might don the No. 10 jersey once worn by the legendary Brady Quinn. This No. 10 jersey belongs to New Canaan, Connecticut signal-caller Drew Pyne.

Pyne, a former 4-star recruit, continues to surprise coaches and fans this spring. Despite the incoming transfer of former Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan, he pushes for the starting position. However, no one should be surprised by Pyne’s spring performance.

Drew Pyne was a highly ranked recruit

Fans are always excited about the latest recruit. Pyne, unfortunately, enrolled at Notre Dame immediately ahead of Tyler Buchner, the highly touted San Diego prospect. This allows fans to forget that Pyne was highly ranked as well.

According to the 247Sports Composite, he ranked as the 225th prospect and 8th pro-style quarterback. Pyne ranks behind Buchner, Phil Jurkovec, Brandon Wimbush, Malik Zaire, and Gunner Kiel as quarterback recruits under Brian Kelly. That means he ranks 6th out of the 14 signal-callers signed by Kelly.

Drew Pyne was heavily recruited

The Sophomore-to-be quarterback held 25 offers including Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, LSU, and Michigan. Pyne received the vast majority of his offers before his Freshman year of high school. Major schools, including Alabama, knew Pyne was going to play college football before he even mixed it up on the high school gridiron.

Drew Pyne is a quick study

The NBC crew harped on the fact that the youngster Pyne texted the veteran Ian Book constantly about the playbook and game film. Pyne wants to become a great player. He is willing to put the time in required for greatness. His “gym rat” work ethic makes up for any physical limitations.

Ultimately, the more experienced and prototypical Coan will win the starting position. But, Pyne proves that he can serve as a viable backup for the 2021 season. No one should sleep on No. 10 any longer.
