Notre Dame Lacrosse: Kevin Corrigan the gold standard at the D1 level

With their win against No. 1 Duke, Notre Dame Lacrosse saw head coach Kevin Corrigan become the gold standard when it comes to D1 lacrosse.

The Notre Dame Lacrosse team is off to a fast start to their 2021 season, going 6-1 through their first seven games, including a monster win the last time out against No. 1 Duke. In that game, the Irish held the Dukies to single-digits for the first time all season, dominating on the defensive side in a 13-8 victory.

That was the third time in a row that the Irish have beaten the No. 1 ranked team in the country, which dates back six years. Also, coming into the game as the No. 5/4 team in the land, the win could move this Notre Dame Lacrosse team into the No. 1 spot in college lacrosse, a testament to what they have been able to do on the field this season.

In the win, Wheaton Jackoboice led the way with three goals, while Jack Kielty shut down Duke star Michael Sowers, a matchup that proved to be the difference. By beating Duke, head coach Kevin Corrigan became the gold standard when it comes to D1 coaches, nothing his 311th win with a single program, passing Delaware’s Bob Shillinglaw.

Notre Dame Lacrosse dominating in 2021

The head coach of the program for 33 seasons, Corrigan has had his fair share of huge victories, and incredibly talented players. However, this 2021 team could be a special one, as they have only lost to No. 9 Virginia 12-11, and against Duke last Saturday, proved to be the better team offensively, and on the defensive end.

They will not take the field again until April 22, which will be another battle against the Blue Devils. As is the case with the football program, this is a group that is excellent every season, and the 2021 campaign could be their best collection of talent since the 2019 squad.

This season, Notre Dame Lacrosse has been led by Pat Kavanagh, who leads the way with 39 points, and 27 goals. In their seven games, they have allowed double-digits in points only twice, the loss to Virginia, and an 18-11 victory over Syracuse. They are getting excellent play from goaltender Liam Entenmann as well, as he has racked up 74 saves across the seven games.
