The Notre Dame Football program is replacing Ian Book, and it looks like the two-man battle between Jack Coan and Drew Pyne will continue after the spring.

After losing Ian Book to the 2021 NFL Draft, after an incredible career for No. 12 in South Bend, the Notre Dame Football program is looking for their new signal-caller. This offseason, they brought in Jack Coan, a graduate transfer from Wisconsin, and one who has the experience to lead this team to wins.

During his time with the Badgers, Coan actually enjoyed great success, leading the team to a Big Ten title game. He displayed outstanding accuracy and was a leader on and off the field, qualities that made him the expected successor to Book this spring.

However, there was talent already at the school, and quarterbacks who have already been in Tommy Rees’ system, and one of them is making some real headlines as he battles Coan for the starting job.

Notre Dame Football QB Battle to continue

The battle between Coan and Drew Pyne has been an exciting one, as we have seen highlights each day of both of them getting used to this collection of Notre Dame skill players. Both have shown the ability to put the ball in tight windows, and as is the case anywhere, having good competition usually brings out the best in players.

Remember, Pyne was a big-time prospect when he committed to the Notre Dame football program as a member of the 2020 recruiting class. A four-star prospect, he was viewed as one of the top-250 players in the country by rivals247, and the second-best player in the state of Connecticut.

The fact that he has been able to step in and really turn heads should not be a surprise, as he served as Ian Book’s backup as a true freshman, and even got some snaps in the national title game. Outside of these two, there is Brendon Clark and Tyler Buchner, though neither is expected to be the No. 1 or No. 2 in 2021.

Buchner is considered the quarterback of the future and has not played since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down football for the state of California this Fall. He has outstanding talent, is a four-star prospect as well, and coaches have raved about his ability to handle the playbook, but the smart move would be to redshirt him this year.

For Coan and Pyne, this battle will continue into the summer months.
