Notre Dame football: 4 Blue-Gold Spring game storylines

Are Any Wide Receivers Stepping Up?

So, it’s no secret the wide receivers were Notre Dame’s biggest detriment last season. The Irish couldn’t throw the ball deep. This meant that they faced stacked boxes and pressing safeties, which could bog down the rest of the offense. Guys like Braden Lenzy didn’t show up when everyone thought they would, and the young players were nowhere to be seen.

This offseason one of the main goals for the offense is to find receiving threats that aren’t a tight end named Michael Mayer. So, how is that going? Are we going to see someone step up during the Blue-Gold Game and flash the potential to be that guy next Fall?

Avery Davis is expected to be a bigger factor, as a graduate student who should be comfortable by now at wide receiver. There is also the question of whether or not Braden Lenzy can take the jump this season that everyone expected him to last season.

If Lenzy hits his potential he could be one of the best deep threats in all of the college football after all. Then there are the younger players. Can Xavier Watts or Jordan Johnson flash onto the scene? Betting money is on Johnson.

There could even be a wild card in the mix, but the Irish need at least one and hopefully multiple receivers to step up next season, and they can show that potential in this Blue-Gold Spring Game.
