Notre Dame football: 4 Blue-Gold Spring game storylines

What Offensive Line Combinations are Used?

The offensive line has been one of Notre Dame’s biggest strengths under Brian Kelly for the past decade. It’s rarely a question. Except, there are definitely concerns heading into 2021 here. That’s what happens when you graduate four out of five starters.

The game on Saturday is going to be a huge help in figuring out who is playing what position and what combinations Brian Kelly and staff are looking at here.

The first question revolves around Jarrett Patterson. He’s the only returning starter, who has played center for the Irish. There are rumors he’s going to be moved from the spot to tackle. The idea being he’s the best offensive lineman available and you want your best offensive lineman going out to tackle. However, very little is confirmed about that, so it will be interesting to see where he lines up.

But who are the four other players? Most people expect Josh Lugg and Zeke Correll to be on the starting offensive line. Again, though, there are plenty of questions as to where on the line they will be playing. Presumably, however, they will be at center and guard, especially if Patterson has kicked out to tackle.

Beyond that, pay attention to the offensive line combinations. This will show both who has been working together as well as what positions guys have been working out at. This can imply other potential offensive line combinations that we may see.

Oh, and there have also been two true freshmen getting looks, Rocco Spindler and Blake Fisher. There are rumors that both of them have taken first-team reps in practice, which is interesting, exciting, and scary all at once.

Or, maybe just exciting.
