Notre Dame Football: Questions answered in the 2021 Blue-Gold game
Running Backs are the feature of the offense
Aside from Michael Mayer, running backs Kyren Williams and Chris Tyree are the key playmakers of Notre Dame’s offense. By flexing them out wide multiple times, Notre Dame football offensive coordinator Tommy Rees showed that he wants to find different ways to get the ball to Williams and Tyree in space.
Offensive Line is shaping up
The Gold team, which appeared to feature most of the first-team offense, showed what the Irish offensive line might look like in September. They started (left to right) Blake Fisher, Quinn Carroll, Zeke Correll, Andrew Kristofic and Josh Lugg.
Jarrett Patterson, Notre Dame’s leader in career starts, figures to nab one of the positions when healthy. The offensive line that trots out against Florida State is left tackle Jarrett Patterson, left guard Dillan Gibbons, center Zeke Correll, right Guard Josh Lugg and right tackle Blake Fisher.
12 personnel is the best option
With Tommy Tremble and Brock Wright departing, the best formation for the offense in 2021 seemed to be 11 personnel with veteran Avery Davis operating as the slot receiver. However, with the slow progression of the wide receivers and the better-than-expected development of the tight ends, Notre Dame’s best option is 12 personnel.
Senior tight end George Takacs developed during the spring and it showed during the Blue-Gold Game. He caught 3 passes for 32 yards. Freshman Mitchell Evans also showed that he possesses talent for 2022 and beyond.
