The Notre Dame Football team is heading into their summer months, and there is still a question mark at the quarterback position.

For the past few seasons, the Notre Dame Football program has had the luxury of having Ian Book as their starting quarterback. All Book did during that time was set the Irish record for most wins as the team’s signal-caller, while also leading the program to two College Football Playoffs.

In 2021, he must be replaced, as he was a fourth-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in the 2021 NFL Draft, leaving a big hole at the position. Some feel that Jack Coan will step in and be the starter, while some like Drew Pyne, and Tyler Buchner put on a display during the Blue-Gold Game.

Should Notre Dame football star Tyler Buchner?

Recently, Connor Muldowney of Saturday Blitz wrote a piece about his views after the Notre Dame Blue-Gold Game, and he came away with one conclusion: Buchner needs to be QB1 in 2021.

Of course, a spring game is really no indication that a true freshman should start right away, especially after missing his entire senior season in high school due to COVID-19. In addition, the Irish have a very reliable starter already on the roster in Coan, a graduate transfer who led the Wisconsin Badgers to a Big Ten title game a few years back.

Also, Notre Dame Football has a very capable No. 2 in Pyne, who was a huge recruit coming out of high school as well. Truth be told, Buchner should be played sparingly this season, possibly keeping 2021 as a redshirt season, especially with so much depth at the position.

Next year, Bergen Catholic star Steve Angeli is joining the fold, so Buchner will also have to beat him out to get the starting job as a possible redshirt freshman. For the Irish, with so many question marks on offense, including a revamped offensive line, the smart move would be to let Buchner come along slowly this Fall, not thrown into the fire.
