The transfer portal is changing recruiting and how rosters are built. Now, after spring practice, is the time for Notre Dame football to strike.

It’s no secret that there is a whole new world to recruiting in college football, and it is time for Notre Dame Football to strike. That, of course, is a world where the transfer portal is heavily used, due to the one-time transfer rule.

If you’ve missed it, players can now transfer one time without having to sit out a season. This came among a push for players’ rights, increased usage of the portal, confusion over the waiver process, and cries of hypocrisy in making transfers sit out a season to adjust but not make freshmen do the same.

So, even if some coaches feared this would create a free agency or that they’d have to work harder to keep players on the roster, the game changed. Most people would agree for the better too. Sorry to the coaches who can’t be tyrants anymore.

The next question people had would be, how is it going to work? Will this change the competitive balance? Well, the truth is that it probably won’t impact who wins and what programs are great in any major way.

Players at great programs who can’t find the field will step down to a place with more playing time. Lower-level players who want a shot will step onto more elite rosters, so everything is balanced. However, this is a great way to bring in talent who wants to play immediately for rebuilding programs.

How does it affect Notre Dame Football?

For a team like Notre Dame, this is a way to fill in the gaps on a good roster to make it a great roster.

Spring practices have come and gone. We, or at least the Irish coaches, know where the strengths and weaknesses of the roster lie. Some of these are a little bit obvious. Notre Dame still doesn’t have a wide receiver that can be trusted to take the next step forward. The Irish could probably also use help at corner, where another athlete might be necessary to compete at the highest level.
