While Notre Dame Football has a star at tight end Michael Mayer, he is not the only exciting player at the position group in 2021.

The Notre Dame Football team has question marks up and down their roster, but who will be their top tight end is not one of them. Michael Mayer was outstanding as a true freshman this past season, and he will lead a position group that is much more than just the man at the top of the depth chart.

Guys like George Takacs and Kevin Bauman will also contribute for the Irish, and we could even see another true freshman in Cane Berrong get some run before all is said and done.

In fact, coming out of high school, ESPN had Takacs as the No. 5 tight end in the country, and he should definitely see more time now that Tremble has left for the NFL. He has the size you look for in an NFL tight end, and while he is not an elite athlete, he is going to have a role on this offense.

Bauman will be the third tight end, but he is another guy who is loaded with talent, and could eventually take over for Mayer in two years if he leaves school early. With injuries in the rearview mirror, this is a guy to keep an eye on this offseason.

We all know how good Mayer is, as he burst onto the scene as a true freshman this past season and took over the position group. Like Kyren Williams, Mayer figures to be one of the top options on the offensive side of the ball for the Irish and will be a perfect security blanket for new quarterback Jack Coan.

After racking up over 450 yards as a true freshman, Mayer could put together a record-setting season for the Irish, especially with so many question marks at wide receiver entering the summer months.

When all is said and done, I believe that Mayer is going to be a first-round selection, as we saw how high a pass-catching athlete at tight end can go this past year in Kyle Pitts. The Irish will need another big season from Mayer in 2021, but they have depth behind him to make the group be one of the best in the country.
