The Notre Dame Football program will lean on Kyren Williams in a big way in 2021, and he could be in line for a historic season in South Bend.

During the 2020 college football season, the Notre Dame Football program was looking for someone to step in as the team’s feature back. Their top running back from 2019, Tony Jones Jr., was gone, and they needed a new leader to step up, and they found their man in Kyren Williams.

From the start, Williams proved to be quite the weapon for the Irish, rushing for over 1,000 yards as a redshirt freshman. He also made his presence felt in the passing game, racking up over 300 yards while proving to also be a dominant blocker for Ian Book.

All told, Williams was one of the more pleasant surprises in college football and helped the Irish to an undefeated regular season. As we turn the page to 2021, he will be counted on even more.

Notre Dame Football to lean on Williams

This season, the Irish will turn to Jack Coan, most likely, at quarterback, replacing a legend in Ian Book. That means there could be some growing pains for Coan in this offense, and when things break down, signal-callers turn to their running backs, and security blankets.

In Williams, Coan has the ultimate security blanket, as he can make plays happen in the run, and passing game. With a full slate, and with all the experience he has from last season, Williams could be in for one of the better rushing seasons we have seen in South Bend in quite some time.

He can already jump into the top-10 in terms of career rushing yards if he can duplicate his 2020 output, but the totals could be even higher in Year 2.

Not only will Williams have a monster season, but his backup, Chris Tyree, is also going to have a major impact on the Irish this season. Overall, Williams has the power and speed to dominate the Irish’s 2021 slate, and when all is said and done, a 1,300-yard season could be in the cards, which would rank No. 5 all-time for a single season in program history.
