Notre Dame Football 2021 Opponent Preview: Florida State

Florida State’s Defense

The defense is turning over a good bit of talent, as Asante Samuel Jr. is off to the NFL, and Janarius Robinson, Joshua Kaindoh, and Marvin Wilson have all left from the defensive line as well. This is going to leave a lot of gaps to cover on the defensive side of the ball.

Luckily, for Florida State at least, the Seminoles tend to recruit at a very high level. This means they’ll always have a lot of athletes, even if it doesn’t always come together as nicely as they’d like it to.

Of course, there’s also the transfer portal nowadays. To match Milton on offense, Florida State is bringing in a UCF transfer coming off a knee injury on defense too. Brandon Moore was a stud at UCF before a 2019 knee injury, and while he hasn’t played since, he could be a great potential replacement for Asante Samuel Jr.

As far as the defensive line goes, there is a lot that’s moved on. But when you’re one of the worst defensive lines in the country at creating pressure, what does it matter? The Seminoles need their defensive line to get better and get better quickly, otherwise, they’ll still be getting tossed around in the trenches.

You have to look harder for positives on defense than on offense, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be ready for a big step forward on this side of the ball.
