Notre Dame football: 3 true freshmen on offense to thrive in a backup role

Tyler Buchner, QB

We close with a player who many fans would like to see take the field in Week 1 against Florida State, and that is quarterback Tyler Buchner. While Buchner showed some solid talent during the Blue-Gold Game, the fact is, he did not even play last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so a year on the bench will do him good.

This is not to say that Buchner should get no playing time as a true freshman, in fact, I think he should get just as much as he can that will still allow him to take a redshirt. In Buchner, the Irish could have a quarterback who could start multiple seasons for them, so watching a veteran like Jack Coan, or Ian Book’s backup in Drew Pyne could end up being the best-case scenario for him in terms of his development.

For the program to keep moving in the right direction, true freshmen are going to have to come in and either assume a starting role or backup some veterans and are ready to take over when their time comes. This is a very solid class of players, and with the 2022 and 2023 classes already looking like elite ones, Notre Dame football is in great shape for the foreseeable future.
