Williams may be expected to carry the Irish offense

As stated earlier, the Irish have lost both of their top wide receivers to the NFL this offseason, with Ben Skowronek being drafted by the Los Angeles Rams, and Javon McKinley signing as an undrafted free agent with Detroit. That means there is going to be some issues on the outside to start, and with a new quarterback under center, the Irish will lean heavily on a running back who they know can get the job done.

Jack Coan will likely replace Ian Book as the starting quarterback, and he is a guy who was able to lean on an elite running back during his time at Wisconsin. That season, Coan gave the ball to Jonathan Taylor over 300 times, and the star running back rushed for over 2,000 yards for the Badgers.

If the Irish are not comfortable with what they have at wide receiver, there is reason to believe that Tommy Rees may deploy the same kind of offense in South Bend. Utilize Williams with the ball in his hands over 30 times a game, work the tight end game with Michael Mayer, and work the clock with a running back who can carry the load.
