According to multiple sources, the Notre Dame football program appears close to a deal with BYU to play a Shamrock Series game in 2022.

Irish Illustrated writer Tim Prister tweeted earlier this year that Notre Dame football was exploring the idea of playing a Shamrock series contest in Las Vegas. On June 17th, during BYU media day, Cougar athletic director Tom Holmoe discussed the possibility of finally playing the final contest in their contract.

"“There’s been some really good discussions with Notre Dame,” Holmoe said. “In years past, it’s been crickets on the set. But I would say that there are good discussions. I think we’re getting close to being able to put together a game that would benefit both of our schools.”"

According to multiple sources, those discussions continue to progress between Notre Dame and BYU potentially playing a neutral site game in Las Vegas. Each school needs to add a single game for the 2022 season.

As independent schools that have an existing contract, it makes logical sense that a deal is almost finished.

Although all dates for the 2022 schedule are not completely finalized, October 8th is the most logical date for a possible Shamrock series class in Sin City. The Irish and Cougars both have October 8th and October 29th open.

However, Notre Dame probably wants to leave a week open before their clash with Clemson. On the other hand, if the teams are selected on October 29th, it gives Notre Dame football players time off near finals. Additionally, a Shamrock Series contest, likely at the new Allegiant stadium, would keep the players engaged before their potentially huge battle with the Tigers.

The inclusion of a Las Vegas Shamrock Series game adds to an all-time slate in 2022 that includes an away game against Ohio State and a home tilt against Clemson. On paper, it promises to be an exciting season.
