Notre Dame football: Isaiah Foskey to have Myjai Sanders-like production
By Brad Weiss
Last year, Notre Dame football defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman got plenty of production out of Myjai Sanders, and Isaiah Foskey could be next.
Before taking over as the defensive coordinator for the Notre Dame football program, Marcus Freeman turned the Cincinnati Bearcats defense into one of the best in the country. Utilizing mostly three-star talent, Freeman led the Bearcats to a 9-1 record this past season, becoming one of the more coveted assistant coaches in America.
When Notre Dame football landed Freeman, the hope was that he not only would improve the defense but also help the Irish bridge the gap in recruiting. He has proven the recruiting part, and as we inch closer to the season kicking off in September, he is getting rave reviews about his coaching abilities as well.
Last season, Freeman got great play from defensive end Myjai Sanders, who racked up seven sacks, had a double-digit total in tackles for a loss and became one of the best edge rushers in the AAC. With Notre Dame, the coordinator has a talented edge rusher returning in Isaiah Foskey, who could be in for a breakout season.
If he can assume the role that Sanders did at Cincinnati, the production will be there, as he is as physically gifted as any other edge rusher on this team.
Notre Dame football should dominate on defense
Foskey is going to be a leader on a defense that should be one of the best in the country this season, especially with how many talented players they have returned. Freeman has a tremendous collection of linebackers, an All-American in the secondary, and the defensive line is a unit that is going to dominate weekly.
In Foskey, he has that disruptive force that every pass rush needs, and there is no doubt that he has the motor to have a Sanders-like impact on this defense. The offense may have questions heading into the summer, but the defense is stacked, and Foskey could play his way into being a first-round pick.
Earlier this week, we spoke about the lack of production coming back from the 2020 team, as the Irish are one of the lowest in the country.
