Notre Dame football: Previewing the 2021 Quarterbacks

Who’s Here

Losing a player like Book would be tough for any program, but the Irish have some solid talent coming back, as well as coming in. Drew Pyne and Brendon Clark return from the 2020 team, and Jack Coan comes in as a graduate transfer, this after leading Wisconsin to a Big Ten title game the last time he was a full-time starter.

Standing in Coan’s way of just coming in and taking over as the starter is Drew Pyne, a highly-touted prospect who was the backup to Book last season. When Book went down in the Rose Bowl, it was Pyne who stepped in for a couple of plays, and he has looked like a starter throughout spring practices.

Then there is the case for Tyler Buchner, a big-time quarterback prospect who has come in and looked like he could be ready to take over as a starter as well. The issue is, Buchner did not play as a senior due to COVID-19 shutting things down in California, so a redshirt season may be the best thing for him.

Ron Powlus III rounds out the group as a true freshman as well.
