Notre Dame football: Previewing the 2021 Tight Ends

Who’s Here?

We have already spoken about Mayer, who is going into his true sophomore season and could be a front-runner for All-American status this season. Mayer will be a focal point of this Irish offense in 2021, especially with a new quarterback in town, so expect him to improve on his already gaudy numbers this Fall.

In addition to Mayer, the position group as a whole is very talented, as both George Takacs and Kevin Bauman return, both trying to earn that TE2 role in Tommy Rees’ offense. The Irish used mostly two tight end sets during the 2020 college football season, and that is something that could certainly be the case in 2021.

Also, the Irish added two tight ends as true freshmen this offseason, bringing in both Cane Berrong and Mitchell Evans with the 2021 recruiting class. Berrong is a strong blocker with good hands, and while Evans was a quarterback in high school, his 6-foot-7 frame is going to play well at the next level.
