Potential Depth Chart

There is no doubt that Mayer will be atop the depth chart for the Irish at the tight end position this season, and you can write his name at the top in Sharpie. Mayer is going to be one of the best players at his position group in the country, and after next season, he will likely end up being a first-round draft choice.

After Mayer is where it gets interesting, as I believe that Kevin Bauman is going to prove that he should be the No. 2 tight end in 2021. Takacs is a tremendous blocking tight end and is going to prove huge in the run game, one that should be one of the best in the country with Kyren Williams returning as the feature back.

Also, I believe that Cane Berrong is going to play as a true freshman, though it may be the best-case scenario for Evans to take a redshirt this Fall. After playing quarterback in high school, Evans will need to not only get used to the college game but change positions, and the Irish are deep enough to allow him to sit and learn in Year 1.

Here is where I feel the depth chart will fall entering the Florida State game:

  • Michael Mayer, Kevin Bauman, George Takacs, Cane Berrong, Mitchell Evans
