Notre Dame football: Ranking the Irish’s 2021 schedule by entertainment value

No. 6: Virginia Tech, Week 6

For all the history that these two programs have personally, they’ve only ever met three times. All three times have come in the era of the ACC agreement, while Justin Fuente and Brian Kelly were the two programs’ head coaches respectively. That’s not a long history, but they have been exciting games.

This may very well be the last time that Kelly gets to go up against Fuente, at least as long as Fuente is the head coach at Virginia Tech. His seat is scorching hot, and while there is room to be optimistic about the Hokies in 2021, there is more room to be negative.

He largely has not been able to maintain the heights of the Frank Beamer era, and if they hadn’t beaten Virginia to finish the season in 2020, he likely would have been fired.

By all means, expect this to be a tight, competitive game that gets just a little bit overhyped in the grand scheme of both teams’ seasons. Still, it should be a great one to watch.

  • Notre Dame leads the all-time series 2-1. They last met in 2019, when the Irish won 21-20.
