The Notre Dame football team had one player named to Maxwell Award watch list, and here is how Kyren Williams can win it.
The list of 80 players named to the Maxwell Award watch list was recently announced, and unsurprisingly Notre Dame football running back, Kyren Williams, was added to the list. Among the other names on the list are Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan, somehow still in school, Ohio State’s Chris Olave, the best wide receiver in the country, Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez, for some reason, and some guy from Boston College named Phil Jurkovec to name just a few of the players on this extensive list.
The Maxwell Award itself is like a minor Heisman Trophy, given to the college football player of the year. However, it should be noted that this is considered an offensive award, even though the occasional defensive player has won it. Of the 80 players named to the watch list in 2021, none play defense.
A group of experts, in particular sportswriters and coaches, vote on the annual winner. The award is named after Tiny Maxwell, who played guard Chicago and Swarthmore, and is now in the College Football Hall of Fame.
Notre Dame has had several winners of the Maxwell Award throughout history, including Johnny Lattner, one of only two players to ever win the award twice, along with Tim Tebow. In total, a Notre Dame player has won the Maxwell Award seven times. The players to win the award include Leon Hart, as previously mentioned Johnny Lattner, Jim Lynch, Ross Browner, Brady Quinn, and Manti Te’o.
