Notre Dame football: 4 Reasons why Kyren Williams will win the Maxwell Award

He’s An All-Around Back

Clearly, Kyren Williams is going to get a lot of attention for being the starting running back at Notre Dame. That’s oftentimes enough to get you on certain watchlists, especially one like the Maxwell Award that puts out an 80 person list. Still, if you actually want to be a finalist or win the award itself, you need to be a standout player.

Williams is that standout player, as he’s more than just a good running back. He’s an excellent all-around running back. That means that he is a great option in the zone rushing game, which has become the preferred run blocking scheme at Notre Dame. He’s also able to catch passes out of the backfield, block in pass protection, and return kicks if necessary.

In other words, he’s a do-anything kind of player who never comes off the field.

This ability to never come off the field is incredibly important when judging a running back for postseason awards. After all, up against a quarterback who puts up massive numbers and doesn’t leave the field, it can be tough to stand out to voters. Still, blocking as Williams did against Clemson, or rushing for 185 yards against Florida State, or snagging 8 catches against Alabama stands out.

It makes him versatile, as well as capable.
