Notre Dame football: One question for each offensive position in 2021

Offensive Line: Will two true freshmen start in 2021?

The Notre Dame football program is one of the best in the country in terms of developing elite offensive line talent, and we saw that during this offseason, where Liam Eichenberg, Tommy Kraemer, Robert Hainsey, and Aaron Banks all started their professional careers. In 2021, the group upfront is going to be completely different, as Jarrett Patterson is the only returning starter, and he is a guy who is likely to change positions.

Incoming true freshmen Blake Fisher and Rocco Spindler are two of the biggest recruits for the Irish, and Fisher is expected to start right away at the left tackle spot left vacant by Eichenberg. Spindler will have a harder time cracking the starting lineup, as he is a guard, and the Irish have two potential All-Americans at the position in Patterson and Cain Madden.

Overall, this is going to be a group that is one of the best in college football in 2021, even though they are replacing four of the five starters from a year ago. While Fisher is likely to start in Week 1 against Florida State, Spindler will likely have to wait his turn, but as is always the case along the offensive line, it is going to be the next man up if someone is injured, and Spindler will likely be that guy.

  • Early answer: Not Week 1, but likely at some point in 2021.
