Notre Dame football: Key two-deep battles to watch for 2021

Replacing Tommy Tremble

By the design of the Notre Dame offense, the tight end spot is incredibly important. The premier player at this spot is obviously Michael Mayer, and by no means is that going to change in 2021. Mayer is by far the best tight end on the roster, but, that was the case last season too, and Tommy Tremble was still important enough to leave school early to be drafted into the NFL.

Clearly, the second tight end is important, but who is it going to be the one to step up and replace Tommy Tremble.

While Notre Dame is carrying six total tight ends on the roster, there are two in particular who stand out as potential replacements for Tremble. The first is George Takacs, a name that is easy to forget for many Irish fans. After all, while he saw time in games last season, he only had a couple of catches.

Still, now an academic senior, Takacs brings a lot of experience and maturity to the offense. He also has remarkable size, standing at 6-foot-6 and 245lbs, meaning he can act as an extra lineman if necessary. The other likely candidate is going to be Kevin Bauman, who is a bit younger and smaller than Takacs, but he does have a lot of potential at tight end.

The former four-star was the 5th ranked tight end in his class and saw some time during the 2020 season. Tremble has large and important shoes to fill, but either one of these two should be able to fill the gap nicely for Brian Kelly and Notre Dame.
