Who is Running Back #2?

If Notre Dame can be confident in one thing, it’s that they can run the ball. Kyren Williams is legitimately one of the best running backs in the game, but the problem is that running back really isn’t an every-down position, and to succeed you’re going to want to find a couple of successful running backs. This will give the defense different looks, and help to keep Williams’ legs fresh.

So, who is going to be the primary second option? It’ll be a battle between Chris Tyree and C’Bo Flemister, both of whom saw playing time last season.

There is more excitement around Tyree from fans than there is around Flemister. Tyree is an incredibly fast running back, who will definitely provide support in the return game. However, the young sophomore has something to prove in terms of his overall ability as a running back.

That isn’t to say that he can’t do that, but he needs to become a more consistent running back. Flemister, on the other hand, brings experience to the backfield. Flemister is a solid back who earned 5.2 yards per carry. Still, it looks like he’s going to be third in the running back room.

All three backs will play, it’s just a matter of how much they play, and which role will they fill. Williams is the all-around back who is going to start, and it looks like Tyree is the two-deep back who is going to become a key figure in the offense in 2021.
