Notre Dame football: Jack Coan has chance to dominate former team
By Sean Smith
The Notre Dame football team is likely rolling with Jack Coan as their starting quarterback, and he will have a golden opportunity in Game No. 4.
September 25th at Soldier Field. Notre Dame football against Wisconsin A date and matchup that Jack Coan has had marked down on his calendar since he transferred to Notre Dame this year on January 1st.
There has not been a starting quarterback announced by Brian Kelly yet, but Kelly said this week “We’re really, really close,” “Really, really, really close. We’re not going to do it here today, but we have an idea who it’s going to be and we want to talk to the kids, probably this weekend. My guess is we’ll have an announcement for you at the start of next week.”
It is expected that the graduate transfer Jack Coan wins the starting job. He has looked better than advertised, making elite throws in practice and he runs better than most people initially thought he would when he transferred to the Fighting Irish.
Drew Pyne has given him a run for his money in the “Pyne Coan” quarterback battle, however, you can’t deny the veteran leadership he will bring to this team this season.
Jack Coan had a standout career at Wisconsin, leading the Badgers to a Big Ten title game, and is adept at taking care of the football.
Here are his statistics at Wisconsin.
- 2017: 5/5, 36 Yards,
- 2018: 56/93, 515 Yards, 5 TDS, 3 INTS
- 2019: 236/339, 2,727 Yards, 18 TDS, 5 INTS
In 2019, Coan was efficient while leading Wisconsin to a 28-27 Rose Bowl Victory Against Oregon. Notre Dame has not won a New Years 6 Bowl Game since the 1990s, and Coan could be the quarterback to end the nine-game “Big Bowl Game” losing Streak.
Notre Dame football to battle Wisconsin on the big stage
Facing his former team on the big stage, and being successful will show Wisconsin that Coan is the real deal, and the Wisconsin job should’ve remained his after his injury. He transferred to Notre Dame to make an impact on Day 1, and early returns have all been positive.
Will he bring a national championship to Notre Dame? Will he end the NY6 Bowl game drought? Only time will tell, but the Irish are going to rely on him heavily this season.
Expectations: I believe that this Wisconsin game will be the best this year for Jack Coan, maybe even the best of his collegiate career. This will also be the best season in Coan’s career, as I expect him to have at least 3,000 yards and 25-plus touchdowns. If Notre Dame has a successful 2021 campaign, as I expect them to, Jack Coan could find himself drafted in the later rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft.
