Notre Dame football: Looking at the QB position in 2021 and beyond

Expectations for the position group in 2021

It will be an interesting year for the Notre Dame football team in 2021, as they begin the season ranked in the top-10 of the first AP Poll. Some media experts are high on the Irish, stating that they have All-American talent on both sides of the ball, while others feel they could take a step back due to how many talented players they lost this offseason.

One of those talented players is Ian Book, the quarterback who won more games for the program than any other signal-caller in history, and one who could get the job done with his arm, and his feet. A playmaker in every sense of the word, Book is going to be a tough player to replace, but the Irish have a nice collection of quarterbacks to do it.

Winning the job, Coan is going to get the majority of the snaps, but as stated earlier, he has a capable backup in Pyne, the No. 2 quarterback under Book last season. Also, the Irish have a potential long-term option in Tyler Buchner, who did not play his senior season of high school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but one who should see some action in 2021, and take a redshirt.

With this group of players, the quarterback spot may not be asked to put the team on their back, as Book did, but they also won’t be the one to lose the Irish games either.
