Notre Dame football: 5 Irish who won’t be underrated for long

Houston Griffith, Safety

It’s been a long time coming for Houston Griffith, with fans waiting for him to break out for a couple of seasons now. For the most part, he’s been a solid player for the Irish, and nothing more really. He hasn’t been able to take that next step into being a key player for Notre Dame.

This had led to him being widely forgotten about as another face on the defense, which has made him an underrated player on this defense.

When Clark Lea left for Vanderbilt, Griffith put his name in the transfer portal to use his final year of eligibility elsewhere. Read into that decision as you will. Maybe he was going to follow Lea. Maybe he just wanted to choose who he played for. Either way, it would be perfectly fair.

However, once Marcus Freeman came to Notre Dame, he was able to re-recruit Griffith to the roster. Now, we don’t know what their conversations were like. It can be assumed that Griffith was excited about his role in the defense, the scheme, Freeman’s style, or a balance of all three.

When a player gets that chance to be rejuvenated by a new coach, they have a chance to grow exponentially. This means that Griffith, who has a ton of natural ability, will have a new opportunity and will play a key role for Notre Dame. Across from Kyle Hamilton, though, he can quietly be a key player on the defense.
