Notre Dame football: 3 Surprises against Florida State in Week 1

Jack Coan

For all the talk of Jack Coan being a ‘game-manager’ heading into the matchup against the Seminoles, he looked everything but in this one. Coan took shots downfield, ran the offense like he had been in it for years, and really put this Notre Dame football team on his back time and time again.

Sure, he does not have the elite arm strength, and the Irish should never try to utilize him in the run game, but he sure knows how to find the open receiver and take care of the ball. He stood tall in the pocket all game long, and was definitely a bright spot, racking up the most passing yards in an opener in school history, and tying the record with four touchdown tosses.

If Sunday night is any indication, the Irish are in great hands with Coan under center, and you can see why the program chose to make him their QB1 for the 2021 season. He will have a lot easier sledding against Toledo this Saturday, but for his first start for the Irish, and in enemy territory, you have to think Coan was a pleasant surprise against the Seminoles.
