The Notre Dame football team needed every minute against Toledo to pull off the victory, and we look at three surprises from Saturday’s win.

The Notre Dame football team was a big favorite against Toledo this Saturday, but in the end, they struggled mightily and looked to let this one slip away. While Jack Coan led a late touchdown to seal the victory, it was a scary afternoon inside Notre Dame Stadium, and the team needs to get some things cleaned up moving forward.

Here, we take a look at three big surprises from the Week 2 win against the Rockets.

The defense continues to allow big plays

It was an issue against the Florida State Seminoles, and it proved to be an issue again on Saturday, as the Irish continue to give up big plays on defense. This was not the case under Clark Lea, but with a new scheme, and moving parts on defense, it seems like a big play is right around the corner when it comes to the 2021 defense.

I am confident that Marcus Freeman is going to get this thing figured out, and by the time we get to the end of the season, this will hopefully be a distant memory. This weekend, Purdue comes in with an outstanding quarterback, who has elite weapons, so Freeman and this defense could be in for another slugfest inside Notre Dame Stadium.
