Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

If there was one matchup to exploit coming into this game, it was Michael Mayer against this Cincinnati defense. That worked to near perfection, and you would’ve liked to see the Irish go to the well a bit more often. You also didn’t want to see Mayer come up limping with an apparent hamstring issue towards the end of the game.

Other than Mayer, though, there were some major issues for the wide receivers. This unit struggled to get open against an admittedly great secondary. Still, the Irish quarterbacks needed help and they weren’t receiving a ton of it. Kevin Austin, in particular, struggled with drops against Cincinnati.

A lot of different receivers got touches, which is nice to see, but there wasn’t much explosiveness or consistency from this unit. Braden Lenzy, in particular, had a good game that he should be able to build on. However, until Notre Dame figures out the quarterback position it’s going to be difficult to build up any consistency or chemistry.
