Notre Dame football studs and duds: Kyren Williams returns to form vs VT

2nd Stud: JD Bertrand

By now, you better know the name JD Bertrand. On a roster that has been decimated by injuries, particularly at linebacker, you need players to step up. Bertrand is one of those guys, who has seen significant playing time that you likely didn’t hear much about over the summer.

Against Virginia Tech, Bertrand dominated defensively. He would lead the way for the Irish defense with 10 tackles, 5 of which were solo tackles. He’s up to 58 tackles on the season now. So, make sure to keep an eye on him, he’s probably around the ball.

2nd Dud: Jack Coan/Tyler Buchner

Let’s talk (very briefly) about what’s going on here. Jack Coan was awful to start the game. Tyler Buchner came in and sparked the offense. Then, Buchner fell apart and got injured. Coan came back in and sparked the Irish to a win. That kind of roller coaster is not what you’re looking for out of the quarterback position.

There were great things that these two did, but there were also a ton of issues from these two. Coan runs into sacks. Buchner throws balls he simply shouldn’t for interceptions. They have their strengths, but for large parts of the game we mostly just saw their weaknesses.
