Notre Dame football at Virginia Tech: 3 Surprises in Week 6

Mostly Buchner, Some Coan, No Pyne

As the week marched forward, it appeared more likely that Coan would start for the Fighting Irish. The decision disappointed many, if not all, Notre Dame football fans. When the graduate transfer from Wisconsin played the first few drives, no one was surprised. Disappointed but not surprised.

What was surprising was when the true freshman quarterback Tyler Buchner entered the contest. Additionally, he did not jump in for a play or two but a whole series. Then, he played deep into the 4th quarter before spraining his ankle. Buchner finished with 113 yards on 6 of 14 passing.

He rushed for 67 yards on 12 rushes. Buchner had two total scores and an interception. Coan returned, of course, to lead the game-winning drives.

Drew Pyne, the player many thought would start, did not make an appearance on Saturday night. The quarterback situation will continue to surprise and perplex and it will be interesting to see what the position group looks like coming out of the bye week.
