Notre Dame football at Virginia Tech: 3 Surprises in Week 6

Most rushing yards of the season

The Notre Dame football team rushed for the most yards this season, as the offense amassed 173 yards on the ground against Virginia Tech. Take away sack yardage, the Irish tallied 184 yards or a 4.6-yard average.

Before Virginia Tech, the Fighting Irish rushed for a high of 132 and a low of three yards. The question is whether the introduction of Buchner led to the uptick in yardage or changes to the offensive line. Buchner’s ability to run and threat to run could be responsible for the rushing success.

The shift to freshman Joe Alt and junior Andrew Kristofic on the left side of the line might also be a cause. In reality, it is probably a little bit of both. Going forward, the Irish need to be able to pound the ball, especially playing against some solid offenses in the coming weeks, enabling the team to control the clock.

They have more than enough talent at running back, and we got a glimpse of Logan Diggs in this one, as the true freshman looked very good in limited action.
