Wide Receivers/Tight Ends

If one player can lead a unit to glory, Kevin Austin did his best to pull the wide receivers and tight ends up by the bootstraps. With 23.2 yards per reception, Austin was the explosive threat that Notre Dame has needed in the passing game, including a long touchdown catch.

He was great, living up to the expectations that a lot of people had for him throughout his career.

Elsewhere the wide receivers and tight ends couldn’t get going. Braden Lenzy was quiet with a bad drop. No one could find Michael Mayer, which is a major issue for the Irish offense. Going forward, Notre Dame and Tommy Rees need to do a much better job in scheming ways for him to get open, while Jack Coan needs to be able to find him when he’s open.

There is also a lot of youth on this roster that needs to get more looks because for now there are issues with this unit.

There was one major black cloud that hung over this unit, and that was the severe knee injury suffered by Avery Davis. It was non-contact and happened later in the game. As of now, nothing is official, but Davis is getting an MRI on his knee. That’s never a good sign.
