Notre Dame football: Projecting the starting lineup for the 2022 season

Defense and Special Teams

Over the past two weeks, the Notre Dame football team has been outstanding on the defensive side of the ball, as they have not allowed a single touchdown. New defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman is certainly putting his stamp on that side of the ball, and if he continues to coach this way, as well as recruit, he won’t be in South Bend for long.

While the defense is losing some key veterans next offseason, they do have some incredibly talented younger players ready to step up, which is exciting. Freeman has shown he can be elite when it comes to his game plans, and he will have a great group to work with in 2022.

Here is a look at the projected starting defense in Week 1 of the 2022 season.

  • DE- Osafo-Mensah Nana
  • NT- Howard Cross III
  • DT- Jayson Ademilola
  • Vyper- Jordan Botelho
  • Will- Jaylen Sneed
  • Mike- JD Bertrand
  • Rover- Jack Kiser
  • CB- Cam Hart and Clarence Lewis
  • FS- DJ Brown
  • SS- Houston Griffith

Here is a look at the Special Teams as well.

  • K- Josh Bryan
  • P- Jay Bramblett
  • KR- Chris Tyree
  • PR- Lorenzo Styles

This starting Lineup has potential for not only another successful 10 win season, but a potential playoff run. Tyler Buchner is the answer the Irish have been looking for at QB. He has the “IT” Factor and is already becoming a fan favorite as a Freshman. The RB group will still be elite despite Kyren Williams potentially leaving.

While the Defense will have a lot of experience despite losing one of the best players in Notre Dame History Kyle Hamilton to the NFL Draft.

Notre Dame is closing the gap with the “elite” teams. They have beaten LSU Twice since 2010, who won a national championship in 2019. Had games with Georgia that came down to the wire, a team that is consistently in the CFP conversations. Is about to have 5 straight 10 win seasons. One of 3 teams to do so.

They have the talent to not only make the playoffs but to finally end the drought and win their first National Championship since 1988. They are closing the gap with the “elite” teams. This 2022 team is going to be elite.
