Notre Dame football: Two Irish become all-time greats against Stanford

Kyren Williams

We start out with Kyren Williams, who burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman in 2020, only to rack up over 1,100 yards on the ground. It was a breakout season for Williams, as the Irish were looking to find someone to come in and fill the featured back role that was left vacant when Tony Jones left for the NFL.

For Williams, his rare blend of running ability, coupled with his prowess in the passing game, and as a blocker made him a key figure for an Irish team that made the College Football Playoff. He seemed to step up big time in the biggest moments and had a lot of expectations on him going into the 2021 season.

After some issues with the offensive line early on, and some struggles to get the run game going, Williams and the Irish offense have exploded in recent weeks. On Saturday night, he became only the fifth running back in Notre Dame history to rack up back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, cementing himself as one of the best to ever do it.
