Notre Dame football: Two Irish become all-time greats against Stanford

Michael Mayer

Saturday night, Michael Mayer broke Tyler Eifert’s single-season reception record for a tight end, hauling in his 64th pass of the season. While Eifert holds most records at the school at the position group, including 140 receptions and 1,840 yards, Mayer has a real chance to break both, as he still has a full year of eligibility remaining.

Already through two years as a starter, Mayer has 106 receptions for 1,218 yards.

Ken MacAfee was a three-time All-American, considered the best to ever do it, and the Irish have produced some elite tight ends in the past, but Mayer is starting to etch his name among the greats to play the position at Notre Dame.

The Irish still have work to do, and the hope is that they did enough to get into the College Football Playoff for the second straight year. Both Williams and Mayer have played huge roles in this offense turning it on in recent weeks, and by the time they finish out their careers in South Bend, they could be two of the best to ever do it.
