Notre Dame football: Potential replacements for Brian Kelly

Matt Campbell

Iowa State Head Coach

If there is one name that everyone expected to move this season, it was Matt Campbell. To this point, though, there have only been rumors surrounding Campbell. Expect them to start up again in the wake of Brian Kelly leaving Notre Dame for LSU.

Campbell has ties to the Midwest, which is always attractive for a potential Notre Dame head coach. He’s also brought the Iowa State program to unheard-of new heights. This can’t be understated, when a program is bad for its entire history then gets good under a certain coach, even if they never get over the hump, it’s a remarkable accomplishment. It can’t be undersold either.

There is the question to deal with as to what Campbell’s personal ceiling is going to be at a different job? He might only be an 8-4 coach. He might be able to take a program with better resources to a consistent 10-2. It’s difficult to tell for now.

It’s also important to remember that Campbell has Lincoln Riley’s number. So, if beating USC matters, he has a track record of beating their head coach.
