The slumping Notre Dame basketball team takes on Illinois in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge tonight inside the State Farm Center.

The Notre Dame basketball team got off to a quick 2-0 start this season, beating up on opponents like CSU Northridge and High Point, before taking on an undefeated Saint Mary’s team in their first real challenge. However, they looked terrible against Saint Mary’s, and after pummeling Chaminade, they could not overcome a tough Texas A&M team.

Tonight, they take on another huge test in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, where they will battle it out against Illinois. The Fighting Illini are the No. 14 ranked team in the country going into this game, and have won their last two games at home, a place that has been good to them to start the 2021-22 college basketball season.

If the Irish hope to prove they can be a legitimate tournament team this season, this is going to be a great chance to do so.

Illinois counters with one of the best big men in the Big Ten, as Kofi Cockburn is averaging nearly 27 points per game this season. Cockburn is coming off a career-high against Texas Rio Grande his last time out, a game that saw him score 38 points in a 94-85 victory.

For the Irish to win this game, he must be stopped, and with very little depth behind both Atkinson and Nate Laszewski in terms of big men, that is going to be a tall task. I like the Fighting Illini in this one, but the Irish to keep it close.
