The Notre Dame football team must tread lightly in the coming weeks, as they hope to hand on to some elite players in the next two recruiting classes.

On Monday, news came down that Notre Dame football would be losing head coach Brian Kelly to the LSU Tigers. At first, it was just a rumor, then it became a reality, with Kelly telling his team to meet him for a meeting to discuss his departure at 7 AM ET on Tuesday.

Well, that meeting lasted only 11 minutes, as Kelly pulled away in his blue Mercedes SUV, and headed to the airport to go to Baton Rouge and be introduced as the new head coach of the Tigers. Notre Dame, on the other hand, would call a press conference with athletic director Jack Swarbrick at the helm, and most hoped it would be to announce a new head coach.

The consensus among players, and recruits was that they wanted Marcus Freeman to be announced as the successor of Kelly. Instead, Swarbrick talked a lot about nothing, stating they would not name an interim head coach for the bowl or playoff game, and they would begin their search.

Notre Dame football loses first big-time recruit

As many of the recruits from the 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes threw their support behind Freeman, in hopes he would be named the head coach, one recruit decided to move on. That recruit was four-star cornerback Devin Moore from Florida, an extremely talented player, and one who could have been an absolute monster in South Bend.

Is he the first of many recruits to turn their back on the program, we can only hope that is not the case.

It remains to be seen what is going to happen with this program, as the Irish will either bring back Freeman to be the new head coach or move on to someone else. One thing is for sure, Kelly is working hard to bring both Freeman, and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to the Bayou, and if he is not named head coach, we could see the program lose more than just Kelly when all is said and done.
