Notre Dame football: 5 reasons the Irish have earned a CFP berth

Notre Dame Shouldn’t Be Punished For Not Playing a Conference Championship

Notre Dame doesn’t play a conference championship game, which means that they don’t get one last time to make a statement the way everyone else competing for a College Football Playoff spot does. They get this final showcase that the Irish lose because of Notre Dame’s proud history of being an Independent.

The thing is that Notre Dame doesn’t play a game against any FCS team. Most other Power Five programs, and programs competing for the Playoff play some cupcake game from the FCS. How much value should Oklahoma State’s 23-16 win over Missouri State count for? What about Alabama’s game over Mercer? They shouldn’t count for anything in the win column. The conference championship is just their twelfth real game on the season. That’s how they should be looked at, as a team finishing its 12 game season.

Notre Dame shouldn’t be punished for not playing in a conference championship game, even though we all know they will be.
