Notre Dame football: This is a terrible Irish QB statistic

The Notre Dame football program may see their quarterbacks have big success in college, but that has not translated over to the NFL at all.

Notre Dame football is known for its long track record of great NFL quarterbacks. That tends to happen when you produce players like Joe Montana and Joe Theismann. However, in recent years, there have been fewer successful NFL quarterbacks to come out of South Bend, despite how many great players the Irish have produced overall.

Ian Book has a chance to change that in his career. With some development, Book has the potential to be a good NFL starter. That, however, wasn’t what happened on Monday Night Football against Miami.

Book was hounded, threw two interceptions, and ultimately got blown out in his first-ever start. The circumstances were poor, and he shouldn’t be judged on them long-term. However, it did lead to an unfortunate stat about Notre Dame quarterbacks coming to light.

Notre Dame football QB struggle at the NFL level

No Notre Dame quarterback has won a game they started in the NFL since Brady Quinn. That Brady Quinn start came in a 2-14 Kansas City Chiefs season. It was a 27-21 win over the Panthers. Since then, Quinn, Jimmy Clausen, DeShone Kizer, and now Ian Book have combined to go 0-24. 15 of those losses are Kizer’s. It’s also the longest losing streak by one school in the NFL since 1950.

All in all, that’s a pretty terrible stat. It’s also hard to say when that streak is going to be broken too. After all, Ian Book is clearly not ready to be a starter in the NFL. Jack Coan likely doesn’t have an NFL future, and we would all love Tyler Buchner to have another three years at Notre Dame. So, it will be a while before another Notre Dame quarterback gets an NFL start unless the Saints put Book in another bad situation.

If Book does get another start, at least we all know that he’s tough and smart. He should learn from the mistakes that he made during his first start and develop from there. After all, Book is a winner.
