Notre Dame football: Fiesta Bowl Offensive Grades vs Oklahoma State

Offensive Line

It’s difficult to grade out the offensive line’s performance against Oklahoma State. When Notre Dame did run the ball, there was very little push and it seemed like the Cowboys could shoot any gap they wanted. The Irish also rarely ran the ball, particularly in the second half. This didn’t give the offensive line any time to make corrections or improve throughout the game.

The offensive line also gave up a few sacks and quarterback pressures throughout the game. But, can you blame them for this? Notre Dame dropped back to throw more than 70 times. Oklahoma State knew it was coming, so they knew to pin their ears back and rush the passer. The reality is that it’s impossible to be perfect under those circumstances.

The Irish also started two true freshmen at both tackle positions. Joe Alt and Blake Fisher have played before this season, but largely due to Fisher’s injury suffered in the Florida State game, this is the first time they were both playing tackle together. And, all told, they were pretty solid in pass protection throughout the game. Again, not much was asked of them in the running game, but it’s good to have your tackles of the future secured.
