Notre Dame football: 3 takeaways from Georgia to be championship contenders

Playmaking

This point is more two-fold because Notre Dame fans, me included, are constantly worried about having an elite quarterback. While it certainly doesn’t hurt, Georgia showed us it isn’t the be-all-end-all for a team with championship aspirations.

Enter Stetson Bennett

With all due respect to the national champion quarterback, Bennett had no business being labeled as such. His team is full of incredible playmakers and guys who could gain separation and move in space using their size and speed.

Of course, a lot of this ties back to recruiting, but it doesn’t necessarily have to. Take a look, for example, at some of the best Notre Dame playmakers on offense over the last few years. Kyren Williams is the most obvious example that comes to mind. Williams was egregiously ranked as the 24th best running back in the nation and 367th overall by 247Sports.

Tommy Tremble, currently a tight end for the Carolina Panthers, is another player in this mold. Highly talented but not given much credit out of high school. The transfer portal is always an option too, look at Ben Skowronek. Last year, Ben was a crucial part of Notre Dame’s receivers group, brought in from Northwestern to help a struggling unit.

The point is while recruiting is key in every aspect of college football, you can find top playmakers anywhere. Tyler Buchner truly has a chance to be special, but the key for him is to manage the game. He doesn’t have to throw for 400 yards and five touchdowns against everyone, but getting the ball to playmakers could make or break the team next season.

Make sure the Irish continue strong pushes in these three areas, and the future is undoubtedly bright
