The Notre Dame football team kicks off their 2022 schedule against Ohio State, in a game that was ranked the No. 1 battle of the month of September.

For the Notre Dame football team, they will be tested early in 2022, as they travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. For head coach Marcus Freeman, this will be his first regular-season game at the helm of the Irish football program, and it could not have come against a more significant opponent.

Not only will both teams be ranked within the top-10 when they kick off inside the Shoe, but they could be both ranked in the top-5. Ohio State is seen as a potential CFP title contender heading into next season, and the Irish could be right on their heels, as they bring back a talented roster on both sides of the ball, and are fresh off an 11-win season in 2021.

The game has a ton of significance in terms of the top-25 ranking, but also to Freeman, who played his collegiate ball at Ohio State. The Buckeyes nearly punched their ticket to the CFP this season, and with a young star at quarterback in C.J. Stroud, they plan to be right back in the mix next year.

Notre Dame football vs Ohio State named the No.1 September game in 2022

Recently, Bill Bender of the Sporting News put out a list of the best games that dot the college football calendar in September of 2022, and it is no big surprise that this matchup made the list. In fact, this matchup came in as the No. 1 game in the entire month, and it will get the college football season kicked off considering it will be in Week 1.

This will be an incredible early-season test for the Irish, and one that could cement them as a College Football Playoff contender early on. Their top-ranked defense will be tested by this Buckeyes offense, and in the end, it will have to be a Notre Dame offense with question marks that gets the job done inside one of the toughest places to play in college football.

Buckle up Irish fans, this one is going to be good.
